Why law school letter of recommendation is important?

In their Guide to Writing Letters of Recommendation for Law School, Boston university stated that

Letters of recommendation do three things: I) provide facts about the applicant 2) render a judgment as
to the applicant’s ability and 3) make the applicant come alive, stand out against other applicants so that
he or she will be remembered in the decision process.

In that guide, Richard Badger, the former Dean of students at the University of Chicago (The law School) stated ‘Each year we read between 8,000 and 10,000 recommendation letters in conjunction with the applications submitted to Chicago’

He further said that

Unlike a number of other law schools, Chicago puts considerable weight on recommendation letters and we find that helpful letters and the evaluative interviews which we conduct often provide the best guidance in making the final decisions among a group of applicants who appear to be equally promising on the basis of other information.

How to write a law school letter of recommendation

To write the law school recommendation letter that stands out and makes the applicant admitted you must

1. Make sure you know the applicant and his educational background
2. Demonstrates the strength (skills) of the applicant as far as the law studies are concerned.
3. show your support

The center of pre-law advising at The University of Wisconsin states that;

As someone providing a letter of recommendation, it would be most useful for you to identify academic and other characteristics that you have observed in the applicant that indicate the capacity to succeed in law school. Specifically, the Law School Admissions Council requests that you address several of “the applicant’s… qualities of mind and character, dedication, responsibility, and readiness for the rigors of advanced academic study.”

I read each recommendation with three questions in mind: 1) How well does the writer know the
applicant and the applicant’s academic record? 2) What does the writer have to say about the applicant’s
abilities and characteristics which are important for success in law school and the profession? 3) In the
final analysis, how enthusiastic is the writer’s support for the candidate’s admission to this particular law
school?
